About Betty & Coretta on Lifetime

Focusing on the extraordinary women behind the two men who would change history, “Betty & Coretta” tells the similar true stories of Coretta Scott King (Angela Bassett), wife of Dr. Martin Luther King (Malik Yoba) and Dr. Betty Shabazz (Mary J. Blige), wife of Malcolm X (Lindsay Owen Pierre). When their husbands were tragically assassinated, these two women not only inherited the mantle of the civil rights movement in America, each also found herself to be a single mother who had to find a way to raise and support her children with no husband or father, resulting in a relationship like no other that spanned more than three decades.

“Betty & Coretta” is executive produced by Larry Sanitsky (Lifetime’s “America”), Mary J. Blige, Kendu Isaacs, Jaha Johnson and Polly Anthony (“Archie’s Final Project”). Yves Simoneau (“Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee”) directed from a teleplay by Shem Bitterman (“Halloween 5″) and Ron Hutchinson (“The Josephine Baker Story”).

A Look at the Coretta Scott King Young Women’s Leadership Academy in Atlanta Georgia

Coretta Scott King Young Women’s Leadership Academy was founded in 2007 and is a public, single sex girl’s school located in northwest Atlanta. We are committed to empowering our girls daily with lessons of love, nonviolent social change, and scholarship. We are steadfast in providing a positive, challenging and academically-oriented learning environment for all. It is our vision that every Coretta Scott King Young Women’s Leadership Academy graduate will enroll in and graduate from a post-secondary college or university.

Statement of Need

Since the school’s establishment, girls have been required to wear our signature light pink collared shirts, chocolate brown pants and/or skirts, black or brown socks, and black or brown shoes.  We believe that maintaining a standard of dress teaches our young ladies self-assurance, responsibility and virtue.  Our core beliefs are centered on training our girls to be “Poised, Polished, Professional, and Prepared”.  Because most of our families are lacking the financial resources to purchase one or more of the parts of a complete uniform (shirt, pants/skirt, socks, shoes), we are consistently seeking ways to assist our families in providing our girls with these garments.  As a school, we proactively accept in-kind donations from previous students who have gently used or rarely worn garments, shop at consignment shops in the neighborhood and scout low-cost uniform vendors; however the need and urgency for these items far exceed our best efforts.

How the partnership will start:

At this time, Saving Our Daughters Yell Confidence Initiative and Coretta Scott King are requesting a donation of $100 to our 2013-2014 One Giver + One Garment = One Girl Geared for Greatness Uniform Campaign to provide a set of uniforms for every young lady who is economically disadvantaged at our school. This donation of $100 will be used to purchase a brand new sweater, two pink collared shirts, two chocolate pairs of pants or skirts, a pair of shoes, and a spirit shirt. By helping us reach our goal of $38,000, you will be actively assisting us in assuring our girls are geared toward GREATNESS.
