…Keke Wyatt supports other Powerful Women for Yell Confidence…initiatives
It’s been a few months now since Celebrity photographers, Derek Blanks and Eric Blanks decided to become trustee members of the Saving Our Daughters organization and filming of the “Yell Confidence”…public service announcements within the industry. The public service announcements have been very successful, which focus on powerful messages directly towards date abuse, hate crimes, school violence, violence against women, and other esteem slayers. The first series of these type of announcements were captured on VH1 reality show; “Love N Hip Hop Atlanta” which rocked the entertainment community.
As October is recognized as the Domestic Violence Awareness month, we are so proud to announce that R&B singer & the incredible vocalist sensation, Mrs. Keke Wyatt, will now come aboard with Derek & Eric Blanks and place her stamp with her own “Yell Confidence”…PSA, which will surely be an inspirational message for young women across the country. In 2008, Keke Wyatt created a most powerful video called Put your hands on me, that displayed images of abuse that women can go thru in a negative relationship.
Keke Wyatts’ personal & power story really fits the organizations’ mission for some of the young women that have participated for years and are involved in some of the discussion groups; like the popular Lunch N Learn-that included business women leaders from VH1, such as Ms. Nyle Washington, who kicked off the discussion launch this past March.
A Look at our Keke Wyatt
Ketara Shavon Wyatt, better known as Keke Wyatt, was born in Indianapolis on March 10, 1982 to Lorna Wyatt, a Caucasian vocalist, and Keever Wyatt II, an African-American organist/vocalist. Her parents were very involved with the church. In public, the family had the image of a happy Christian family but behind closed doors there were problems stemming from abuse and also adversity experienced by the family’s multi-racial background. Keke started singing at the age of two, along with her siblings, making her first appearance in front of a live audience at age five. At the age of ten she recorded the gospel song “What If.” As a teen she performed with various girl groups, even auditioning for and being invited to join The Dollz, which featured a young Beyoncé and later evolved into Destiny’s Child. Still in her teens, Keke became a protégé of the noted producer Steve Huff, often recording demos for gospel labels and developing her songwriting.
“Ms. Wyatt, perhaps the finest R&B vocalist of her generation, burst on the scene with two breakthrough hit duets with Avant at the tender age of 18 and seemed on her way to stardom. An acknowledged vocal talent and married to her manager with whom she had started a family, it seemed as though she had the best of both worlds. But fate had other plans for her as both her career and personal life became difficult, leading to eight years of personal and professional exploration. Keke endured domestic abuse, which resulted in a notorious stabbing incident. At the height of her career breakthrough, Keke’s private struggle with domestic violence became the main focus in the media, rather than her newly-released album in 2001. Keke was arrested for stabbing her husband, charges were later dropped but her career suffered from the negative attention.
In 2004, the songstress signed with Cash Money Records. Her first single for the label, “Put Your Hands On Me,” became the #1 most added urban track on the radio in April 2005. However, her entire album was lost when the hurricane “KATRINA” happened. After being released from Cash Money, Keke signed with TVT Records in 2006 and recorded the GHETTO ROSE album. The title track was released as a single and began picking up airplay but TVT suddenly declared bankruptcy before the album could be released. Keke then licked her wounds and used the time off to write, act, and devote time to family.
The release of her second album “WHO KNEW?” by Shanachie in 2010 marked her return to the spotlight, with the title track single garnering urban airplay and a haunting version of Rachelle Ferrell’s, “Peace On Earth”, receiving acclaim. Keke re-launched in 2010, divorced from her husband of ten years, moving with her four children from her home state of Kentucky to Atlanta, releasing a comeback album, WHO KNEW? and ultimately finding true love with her current husband, Michael Ford. Making up for lost time; Keke Wyatt’s third album, “UNBELIEVABLE”, captures the full range of her talent, as she is joined by special guest vocalists, Ruben Studdard, Kelly Price and Tweet. Acclaimed Singer, Songwriter, Keke Wyatt has been named as a Spokesperson for The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV) in the struggle to end domestic violence and sexual abuse. NCADV’s mission is to organize for collective power by advancing transformative work, thinking and leadership of communities and individuals working to end the violence in our lives. Keke Wyatt’s affiliation with NCADV is one that is important to the singer who often sings songs about the subject of abuse. The celebrated and dynamic singer says, “I am proud of my affiliation with NCADV and I am happy to be able to lend my voice to their mission. I often perform songs about domestic violence and for me it is a stress reliever. I want ladies and girls to know they are not the only ones going through what they are going through. You’re human just like others in the situation. I think that’s why people go through things, so you can help someone else. God helps you help others get out of the unhealthy situation.”
Today you can turn on your TV and see Keke Wyatt and her beautiful family on TvOne’s number one show, “R&B Diva’s.” “R&B Diva’s” takes you inside the lives of 5 strong women, Faith Evans, Nicci Gilbert, Monifah, Syleena Johnson and Keke Wyatt.
