Saving Our Daughters is proud to announce one of the most influential and brightest young actresses in Hollywood will support the organizations’ efforts for girls against bullying.
Quvenzhane Wallis, received an Oscar nomination at 9 years old, for her role as Hushpuppy in “Beasts of the Southern Wild.” Quvenzhane also starred and was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for her role in, “Annie”, alongside Academy Award Winner, Jamie Fox and amazing actresses, Cameron Diaz and Rose Byrne; she surprised our younger Cinderellas of the Boys & Girls of Harlem during national bullying awareness month in October.
Quvenzhane, who is now 14, recently published two children books through Simon and Schuster: “Shai & Emmie Star in Break an Egg” is about two best friends at a performing arts school, while “A Night Out with Mama” is a picture book based on her time at the Oscars.
All of the Cinderellas received Quvenzhane’s “Shai & Emmie Star in Break an Egg” at our community partner Barnes & Noble of Tribeca, on Tuesday October 3, 2017. Quvenzhane made sure she shared hugs for each one of them as she encouraged all the Cinderellas to believe in all of their dreams.
Quvenzhane states “reading is one of my favorite things to do. It’s something I would want everyone to do, especially teenagers my age. I don’t think we read as much as we should.”
Quvenzhane will be joining as a positive “Celebrity Godparent” for the Saving Our Cinderellas curriculum and will visit select cities to share her book with some of the girls in 2018 within the book club literacy component of the program.
It will be so exciting for the Cinderellas to meet the phenomenal Quvenzhane and enjoy the world of reading, while building up self-esteem for her girls.
