In May, MYCOM of Cleveland and Saving Our Daughters partnered to sponsor, actor and activist, Grace Byers, who stars in Fox’s hit series Empire, for a special visit to Cleveland to discuss her New York Times, Best Selling book, “I am Enough”.
Grace serves as one of the first philanthropist ambassadors for the “Saving Our Daughters’ organization’ on Broadway performing arts program and is a “Celebrity Godparent” mentor for the program. In her spare time, she volunteers with her nonprofit antibullying organization Saving Our Daughters and she lives in Los Angeles with her husband, actor Trai Byers.
Grace experienced bullying throughout her childhood, which led her to write I AM ENOUGH, which was born out of her desire to empower young girls against the effects of bullying.
Grace inspired over 75 girls from Euclid Park, Fullerton and Brush that day discussed bullying, self-esteem, individual experiences and the importance of the art. The girls also participated in a Q&A session, socialized over pizza and cupcakes, and received their own autographed copy of I AM ENOUGH by Grace Byers and Illustrator Keturah Bobo.
“I had so much fun visiting Euclid Park Elementary School in Cleveland, Ohio today! Always wonderful to spend time with my Saving Our Daughters’ girls.” – Grace Byers
The special literacy initiative event at Euclid Park Elementary was coordinated by Saving Our Daughters’ co-founder and Cleveland native Debbie Collins-Benjamin, Program Director & Educator, Lisa Hare, Event Coordinator, Pamela Stewart-Collins and MYCOM’s Network Director, Kasey Morgan.
The event was also honored to have Mayor Blackwell of Maple Heights to attend and lend her support for the program. Mayor Blackwell is also a mentor of the program for Saving Our Daughters’ to encourage girls to read. Also a special thank you to Principal Woody of Euclid Park on allowing her girls to participate in the Saving Our Daughters reading program this 2018 school year.
“It’s our mission to inspire and empower as many girls as God will allow, and part of my empowerment came from being a student at Whitney M. Young and the Cleveland Public Schools.” -Debbie Collins-Benjamin Co-Founder
