“I Absolutely loved being a part of this, it was truly a beautiful and wonderful experience” Lyric Ross
On Tuesday, March 19th, young actress, Lyric Ross, best known for her role as ‘Deja’ on NBC’s award-winning show, “This Is Us”, visited the Cleveland Cinderellas of Saving Our Daughters & MyCom for the last Q&A Literacy Luncheon of the school year.
As in past Literacy Luncheons, the discussions are unique in that they focus on the importance of reading and imagination, while their mentors aid their adolescent peers through the exploration of their feelings, challenging experiences and ways to overcome them. The Q&A session was once again hosted by MYCOM’s Brenda Pryor and 93 FM Radio One’s Personality and Celebrity Godparent, Kenya Brown. Each girl had the opportunity to relate to certain experiences expressed by Lyric during the luncheon.
Lyric recently joined as a positive “Celebrity Godparent” mentor this spring within the Saving Our Cinderellas program in order to reach out to girls of multicultural backgrounds to encourage them within the arts to help deter bullying in school; which is the main mission for the Saving Our Daughters’ organization.
Held at the Crowne Plaza, Playhouse Square, Lyric empowered the Cinderellas, discussing the complexed, character “Deja” and her stressful relationship with the biological mom and her new foster family. Deja battles for love, trust and stability, often experiencing a reversal in roles, where she must act as the parent and mature one. Over 150 girls from 10 different neighborhoods participated and asked their own personal questions that concerned them at their schools, home and foster care programs.
One of the powerful moments from the luncheon that touched the girls, was the revelation of cutting off your hair. Lyric discussed how cutting her hair personally for one of the episodes, was very emotional for her. Her character Deja suffers from alopecia. She shared how her real long hair was often a shield of protection for hiding her “flaws” in her mind. It took time for Lyric to get use to; as she had to build up her own self-esteem, while adapting to short hair.
The 2018-2019 Literacy Luncheon series concluded with Lyric adding to the previously empowering sessions this year with actresses/ singers, Keke Palmer and FOX Empire’s Serayah McNeill.
About Lyric Ross
Lyric started demonstrating her acting talent at age two when she would recite lines and scenes from some of her favorite films. Eventually signing with an agent, Lyric went on to book print ads and commercials before eventually booking her first big screen appearance in the Bollywood movie, Dhoom 3.
Her television debut came at the age of 11 when she appeared in an episode of the USA Network series Sirens and NBC’s Chicago Fire in 2015. Not long after, Lyric joined the cast of the Indie film entitled The Year That Changed Us; the Untitled Lena Waithe Project and the upcoming 2018 Indie film, Canal Street, where she portrays the daughter of a Chicago prosecutor (played by Mekhi Phifer).
